CCYW’s Day in the Life Internship – New World Library

Many high school students consider and then reconsider what they want to be when they grow up, question what college they should attend, and even their major.  Internships are one of the best ways to introduce these future professionals to a potential new career.  Unfortunately, high school students today are working with impacted schedules with very little time to commit to a lengthy internship combined with school, homework, sports, and a myriad of other activities.  Because of this, CCYW offers the opportunity to get a glimpse of a career in a day.  One day can provide a wealth of knowledge, the opportunity to dispel any myths and the potential to create a new passion for their future.

Capitol City Young Writer’s “Day in the Life” internship program was launched on June 2, 2009 in New York City with the “Day in the Life of a New York Editor.”  Hachette Book Group was gracious enough to accommodate three CCYW members, allowing them the opportunity to shadow an acquisitions editor for the day.  For the past two years, Chronicle Books in San Francisco opened their doors to this program.  This year, New World Library in Novato will be hosting three of our members for a day-long adventure in publishing.

If you are a high school student who is interested in publishing, and available on April 5, from 9am-3pm, please email Verna Dreisbach at verna@capitolcityyoungwriters.org.  New World Library is located in Novato, CA.

Last year, Jamie participated in the 2011 Internship at Chronicle Books.  Here’s what she had to say about the experience.

My experience at Chronicle Books was absolutely incredible! I have been considering a career in publishing for the past couple of years and after the Day in the Life I know that it is definitely what I want to do. I never knew that there was so much creativity put into the process by the editors. I used to think that they just checked things for spelling and grammar mistakes, but they play a huge role in designing the covers and adjusting plots and even pioneering new ideas for books. It was encouraging to see that the job isn’t all about sitting at a desk with a red pen; there is actually a lot of interacting with other people in different departments. My favorite part of the day was sitting down with Naomi Kirsten, one of the associate editors, and brainstorming ideas for new books that would appeal to teen audiences. I also really enjoyed going through the “slush pile” which is made up of all the submissions that people mail in. The only way I can describe how much I loved that day is to say that it was better than Disneyland. The experience has solidified my dream of working at a publishing company.
