“Meet the Author” Event Success!!

On Saturday December 5th, students from around the area gathered at Sacramento State to meet and absorb the words of professionals in the worlds of publishing and writing. The morning began as published author Jennifer Basye Sander spoke about her road to success as an author, and gave advice to members about how to get there as well. “It’s like a business,” she said, “and you have to write about things you know, things you love.” After a question/answer segment, Jennifer signed copies of her latest work, The Complete Idiot’s Guide To Getting Published, for each member.
Next, CBS 13 News reporter, Koula Gianulius, took the stage. She dispelled the myths behind reporting on television; there is a ton of writing involved, contrary to what most people believe. A graduate of UC Davis, Koula described how she ended up in Redding, than Reno, before making it back to the capital city. CCYW members heard first hand how a career in reporting/journalism could be a path for them, especially as the great writers they are.
Later J.T. Long, freelance writer and editor, advised the group on pitching stories and ideas to a variety of different types of publications. “You have to spin your idea in a way that meets the editor’s needs,” she said. Her lecture was complete with a creative workshop which encouraged her listeners to participate. They wrote original query letters to editors from real publications to practice pitching their stories.
Overall, the December event was a great opportunity for CCYW members to hear from professionals who use their writing skills in different ways. From novelists to reporters, it was apparent that there are many facets in which one can thrive on writing for a living.
For members: How did you benefit from the event? What was your favorite part? Any remarks or feedback would be great!!

Sounds like a very exciting meeting! Having so many successful writers speaking about their experiences is very inspirational. Hearing about their trails and travails no doubt comforted many who were suffering from writers block or a lack of ideas. I think it’s wonderful that such opportunities are made available to young writers.
